Two Week Recap

The last two weeks have been a whirlwind, and I unfortunately did not get many pictures. :(
Thank you to all who families who have attended our events and helped on the field trip. Your support means so much, we couldn't do it without you all!

The talent show was just awesome! The kids worked so hard on their performances and ended up performing 4X!

We read, "Beetle Bop" by Denise Fleming
We made jars of bugs and used glow in the dark glue to create lightening bugs. We closed the shutters, turned off the lights and showcased our glowing bugs with the soundtrack of crickets in the background.

We read "I hear a pickle" by Rachel Isadora

Focussing on our 5 senses we ate a strawberry mindfully. Later that afternoon we had an opportunity to do it with a piece of watermelon. The kids really took time to observe and describe the two different fruits in great detail.

We read "If I Built a Car" and the kids drew blueprints for their own vehicle designs.

Sports Day was a huge success! It was the best Sports Day I have ever had with a Kindergarten class. The kids all showed great cooperation, listening, and sportsmanship. I am very proud of them!

The SPCA fundraiser was a huge success. The girls managed to raise $84 to help animals, Way to go!!!
I am very inspired by all the kindness ninja projects happening in our classroom and next week,  I will be cutting off 10 inches of my ponytail to donate to "Wig for Kids BC".  They have recently had a decrease in donations and are in need of hair.

Busy Week!

Hello!
We had a super exciting week!

Monday:

Thank you to Fire Fighter Duncan for arranging a fire engine visit. The kids were all super excited to meet the fire fighters, hear important tips about fire safety, and to get a chance to climb inside the fire engine. While giving the safety talk the kids got to witness the crew being called out to an emergency. We all watched as the crew quickly climbed into the truck and drove away with lights and sirens. Luckily the call was not too serious and they were able to return to the school to show the kids some equipment and the truck.

Tuesday:

The family celebration was a blast! The kids were all so excited to perform for you all and to spend the special time together after. Thank you to all that made it out!

Here is a list of the songs we performed and some links:

Wednesday:

We have another fundraiser happening led by a group of animal enthusiasts. Sparked by the SPCA magazine, this group has been making animal themed bookmarks to sell for a donation. So if you have any spare change around, the kids would love to add to their cause. So far they have raised $33.65. They will be presenting their project to the buddy class and I'm sure they will make some good sales there.

Thursday:

We did a class created retelling of the Jack and the Beanstalk story using yoga and movement. After each child designed their own version of the giants castle and planted a "magic" bean. The kids were happy that we finally planted our beans after our first set became moldy after a long weekend in the dark. Oops!

Friday:

Our class is loving Mo Willems books, so we spent the day reading various stories and learning how to draw some of his famous characters.

We used the Pigeon stories to discuss the difference between needs and wants. The class made a list of things that they need: food, a home, water, clothes, showers and baths, and family. We then had a discussion about how some people need things that maybe others do not. This was a very interesting discussion as one of the pigeon books is about the pigeon wanting a puppy. The students mostly agreed that a dog was a "want", however some students pointed out that some people need dogs for assistance and then going further another student explained how some people need a dog (or any pet) for companionship. This class melts my heart!

For fun, we made covers for Pigeon books that don't exist yet.

Carnival Week

This was a crazy busy week with the carnival. The kids had such a great time! Thank you to all the people who helped to organize and all the families who supported this awesome event.

Tuesday:

Today the kids continued to talk about how to be kindness ninjas. Thank you to a student who brought in a magazine and poster from the SPCA. We read a few articles from the magazine as a class and discussed how it is important that not only are we kind to people, but that we are kind to all living creatures. This student and a group of friends have started a project designing bookmarks with different animals on them to help support the SPCA. The kids are just in the beginning stages of this project.

Wednesday:

Today we finally got an opportunity to paint our castles. This proved very tricky... we will be repairing our castles this week with a glue gun.
We have been very busy getting ready for the family celebration. The kids all drew family portraits that will be on display in the gym on Tuesday morning.

Thursday:

Today we read a book called, "How to Lose all your Friends". After reading all of these rules we came up with 6 rules on how to be a friend. The kids worked together to illustrate each of them and they are on display in the cubby area.

Friday:

We started the day with our Star of the Week giving us a lesson on Serbian Dancing. It was so much fun! It was Pajama day and many of the kids were very tired from the carnival, so we turned down the lights and had a quiet centre time.
We had buddies in the afternoon and at the end of the day watched Peg + Cat the giant problem which took the Jack and the Beanstalk story and our math concept of making 10 and mashed them together.
