Week 12

Monday:

The student were introduced to three sight words: I like the
They played a game searching around the classroom for the words while Ms. Durber called them out. They each received a book so that they could practice reading the new words to each other.

Ms. Durber led Mind-up lesson #2.
The student learned the difference between being mindful and unmindful. While they read the book:
How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food? the students used thumbs-up and thumbs-down to identify if the dinosaurs were acting mindfully or unmindfully.

The class sat in silence and was able to hear tiny sounds such as the clock ticking and other classes talking.

Tuesday:

Ms. Durber tackled a couple more wonder wall questions:

How do trees grow?
Why do leaves fall from trees?

Ms. Durber prepared a felt board for the students to see the changes that a tree goes through as it grows and then through the seasons.

In the afternoon we learned about two new artists: Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.
We read "When Pigasso Met Mootise" by Nina Laden to learn a little bit more about the artists.

We looked at different artworks made by Henri Matisse and learned that when he was older and couldn't paint anymore he started to cut out paper shapes and glue them down. We made out own cut and paste art inspired by 'Icarus'.

The kids took turns holding a pose while their friends drew stick figures of their position. Then they cut out the shapes as well as stars and a heart for the figure.

Wednesday:

The kids focussed on printing the letter Aa today. In the afternoon, we focussed on Pablo Picasso's art and drew portraits of each other in his Cubist style. After they practiced drawing on white boards at the carpet and then drew self-portraits.

New Game:

Thursday:

The kids were lucky to have Ms. Durber and Mrs. Kinton for the day. They completed an artist study of Emily Carr and used oil pastels to draw trees in her style.

Friday:

The kids started a stem challenge with buddies. The kids were given a red and green piece of paper and told to cut them in strips in order to make the longest paper chain that they can. We will see the results next Friday.

The kids also started their first Journal. We are encouraging the kids to take risks with their writing and start trying to get letters onto the page to represent words. We call this kid spelling.

And some upcoming excitement... the Halloween haunted house is getting a makeover into a gingerbread house! :)

Week 11

Tuesday:

The students explored some new math centres today. We have been receiving lots of letters from other kindergarten classes and went for a walk to mail our letter Xx's out to across the province.

Wednesday:

Ms. Durber taught a lesson on patterning. The students demonstrated their patterning skills by working together to build patterns out of unifix cubes. We also enjoyed a walk through the path to Blumsen park to make observationsa

We have started to get the hang of quiet time, here are some friends enjoying some stories together.

We completed an artist study on Jackson Pollock followed by a marble painting activity. A few students felt really inspired by his work and created their own Jackson Pollock inspired pieces out of other materials in the class. :)

Thursday:

The students started the day by rehearsing their songs for the school play. When they returned to the class they practiced their printing skills, reviewing how to correctly form the letters Cc and Tt. Ms. Durber taught a lesson on Piet Mondrian and had the students complete an art piece using straight lines and primary colours inspired by the artwork of Mondrian.

Friday (TOY DAY!)

Our first official Toy Day was a success. The kids were all very excited to share their toys and tell their classmates about them. A few toys had to serve some time in Toy Jail (they loved creating the signage for this one), but they learned their lesson quickly and had wonderful behaviour for the rest of the day. ;)

We will continue Toy Day every Friday. If anything changes I will let you know.

Week 10

Monday:

We introduced the art of Georgia O'Keeffe and painted poppies to contribute to the Remembrance Day Assembly wreaths. We looked at several flower paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe and then looked at some images of real poppies. The students used the palm of their hands to paint the poppies and added the black centre with their fingers.

If the students are interested in learning a little more about O'Keeffe here is a little video you could watch together.

Tuesday:

Mrs. Durber introduced the concept of Peace with the students using The Peace Book and having the students complete a drawing of what peace was for them. She encouraged the children to make WOW pictures, taking time to draw setting and finish by taking time to do their best colouring.
Their Peace pictures are on display in the hallway. Come by to check them out if you get a chance.

Wednesday:

The students attended their first assembly in the gym today. As it was a solemn occasion we had to prepare the students to sit quietly, respectfully, and not clap. This was a very beautiful assembly, however, it was a lot of sitting and listening for the kindergartens... and they did AMAZING!!!!!
Mrs. Grills commented on how impressed she was with how respectful all the Kindergarteners were. Way to go!
To celebrate their amazing behaviour in the assembly we finished the day with a Kindergarten Dance Party with Mrs. Kinton and Ms. Steven's classes.

Thursday:

We had a very busy Thursday. Ms. Durber set-up story workshop with some extremely inviting scenes. The kids worked extremely well together and are beginning to tell longer and more detailed stories.

After recess we went for a walk to collect leaves. Ms. Durber read, "Going on a Leaf Hunt" and the students searched for perfect Fall leaves to make leaf rubbings.

In the afternoon, the students completed an artist study on Andy Goldsworthy, and environmental artist. They then headed back out to the forest area in small groups with Ms. Durber to make their own forest floor art.
