Three Little Pigs Week and Zumba

This week we focussed on the fairy tale, "The Three Little Pigs". We started by having the kids retell the story as they know it and then throughout the week revisited several different versions of the story including various stories where we predicted whether the wolf was the "good" or" bad". We compared and contrasted the various stories, created our own versions with puppets, and took the opportunity to learn about real wolves.

We used our STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills to build structures out of various materials. The kids chose materials and designed a blue print of a house to withstand the wolf huffing and puffing and blowing it down.

We were also very fortunate to have Natalie teach us Zumba everyday. Here are some of the songs, in case you would like to Zumba at home:

Last Week of February

Whole week, all in one!

This week we continued to focus on friendship skills and kindness. We played a few new games in the classroom and added a fun new contraption to the telephone game.

The students continued to visit activities around the number 100... the bingo dabbers were a very popular item!

We read a book by a Métis author about Totem animals and the qualities that each animal represents. The students then decided which animal they felt most similar to and wrote about it. It was interesting how self-aware the kids were during this activity. I think I could have guessed every animal that they chose.

We have been doing daily math challenged during calendar, some of the students are excited to create their own challenges during free time for each other.

We recently started using picture cards as a class to create collaborative story-telling. This has been so much fun! The students have also been choosing to do this activity with friends during free-time.

Story workshop this week featured various animal scenes. The students just focussed on the beginning and created stories that began "Once upon a time..."

Here are some of the tales:

"Once upon a time a big dinosaur was swimming in the water and everybody wanted to go in the water and he was so big that he hid everybody with his big tail..."

"Once upon a time the bear was fighting the fox. The moose was fighting the owl. The fox was fighting the bear and the owl was fighting the moose..."

"Once upon a time there was an owl and a bear. The bear and the owl got a dog...."

"Once upon a tie there was a bridge that was falling down and the animals didn't know what to do..."

"Once upon a time there was a tiger and it ate a cheetah and then a cheetah ate the tiger..."

In math, we are working on making 10. We have beans that are coloured red on one side and white on the other. The students used the ten-frame and the beans to explore different "friends of 10" (1+9, 2+8, etc.) There is a fun video and song that you can check out here:  Friends of 10
