3rd Week of February

Tuesday:

We started to get ready for the 100th day of school. We counted to 100 and completed 100 exercises with Jack Hartman.

100 Exercises song

I transformed the kids into 100 year olds using a filter so that they can guess who their friends are.

And we learned how to use a 100 chart to count classroom items.

Wednesday:

We had such a great time dressing up like old folks and participating in various activities around the theme of 100.

We counted and shared our 100 collections.

We looked back at life 100 years ago with music, film, and photographs.

And read books about the 100th day of school.

Here are some pictures we looked at and discussed.

Thursday:

Today we reflected on our 100th day activities. We continued to discuss the number 100. The students independently completed a drawing and writing activity: What would you buy if you had $100 dollars? Most of the kids would be adding new exotic pets to you homes, so just a warning if they are saving up in their piggy banks right now. :)

Upcoming Dates:

Wednesday, February 27th Pink Shirt Day and Sock Hop

Friday, March 1st Class Photo Day

Friday, March 15th Skating Field Trip (Notices will be sent home this week)

Snow Week!

This short week, we focused on love and kindness.

Wednesday:

The students had fun building hearts out of various materials. We read a very sweet story about a mime and partnered up with classmates to play the silent mirror game, where one partner "mirrors" the movements of the other partner.

Our star of the week dazzled the students with a special visit from Spider-man.

Thursday:
The kids were so excited to hand out and receive all the special valentine's from their friends. It was a great opportunity to practice reading each other's names.

We completed one of my favourite activities called: Don't wrinkle my heart.
We passed around a paper heart and shared things that can hurt peoples feelings. For example, if someone says, "I don't want to play with you." or "I'm not your friend." With each idea we shared we would crinkle the heart.
After the heart was all crumpled up we brainstormed things to say to make friends feel better after hurting their feelings. Examples included, "I'm sorry." "Please come play with me." "You are my friend." "I love you."
While we shared these, we smoothed out the crumbled up heart. With each kind phrase we tried to fix the heart. Once we went completely around the circle the heart was still wrinkled. The lesson we take away is that when we say unkind things, they stick with us, even after apologies are made.
We all signed the heart as an agreement that we are going to work our best to not wrinkle any hearts.

Friday:
We did choral reading with an emergent reader book called, "What do you love?" The kids completed the last page by illustrating and writing what they love. They had the help of Turtle to speak slowly and write down the sounds they heard in the word.

With buddies we complete maps of our hearts, drawing and writing the things that we love.

We are ready for another short week, with an exciting day on Wednesday. The kids are invited to dress up like they are 100, not mandatory, but it is always fun. Tip: You can use baby powder to grey hair colour.

First Week of February

Hello All!

I hope you have all enjoyed the snow days. Here is a quick look at the past week.

Monday:

Lunar New Year

We started the day with a fantastic assembly for Lunar New Year. The kids learned about the origin of the different animals representing each year. Then traditional dragon dancers performed, as well as various students, including one of our own. Each of the students received a lucky red envelope to take home.

We checked in to see Wiarton Willy's prediction and he reported that we will have an early Spring... I'm thinking he was VERY wrong!!!

In the afternoon we went to the gym and participated in various activities organized by the PAC. The kids had such a wonderful time.

Tuesday:

I was at DEC with Mrs. Rolufs and Mrs. Oldham working on a project about Social Emotional Learning. I made a new connection with the kindergarten teacher at the outdoor school and we are planning a day that we can visit them in the spring.

Mrs. Kinvig was happy to return for another day with the kids. The students read a book about Lunar New Year and made dragons. They paraded them through the classroom and over to Mrs. Kinton's class. Fun!

Wednesday:

On Wednesday afternoon we completed a teaching rotation. The students made button blankets with Mrs. Kinton and learned more about Coast Salish art with Mrs. Prades.

Our star of the week shared a beautiful pop up story of Alice and Wonderland.

Thursday:

Today we continued our theme of Lunar New Year and completed a directed drawing of a pig and practiced writing the Chinese Character for pig. We later used our drawing to create a lantern to hang.

One of our students brought in a beautiful book that is written in Cantonese about Lunar New Year. The students loved to see the beautiful and interactive pages. Thank you for sharing!

Friday:

How exciting for the kids to spend the day with Ms. Durber as an official teacher!
Ms. Durber was very excited to see all of the kids. Thank you to the star of the week for teaching the kids some new songs. I look forward to hearing them on Monday.

In the afternoon the students completed their last First Peoples rotations. The students visited Mrs. Rolufs, Mrs. Ising, and Mrs. Hudson.
